Service Description

This 50 minute session (a therapeutic hour) is the starting point in a Somatic Counselling journey. In this time together we explore your reasons for embarking on this path and how somatic counselling may support you. One of the most important aspects of any counsellor/therapist relationship is that you both feel comfortable and heard. So this is an opportunity, not only to start on this journey, but to check that this is the space for you, in a way that a quick 10 minute 'discovery call' cannot This approach blends talk therapy with body awareness and integration techniques to help you process emotions and experiences stored within your body. Throughout this process we use somatic techniques to strengthen and increase the flexibility of the nervous system, which essential improves our capacity to cope with stressors, giving space to connect with self again. The tools and techniques we practice are designed to support sustained change, an impact which remains long after our time together ends. We use techniques derived from mindfulness based practices, yoga, psychotherapy and other practices. Often in today's world we use our brain and 'logic' to such an extent that we have forgotten our innate intuition. As we explore strengthening this body-mind connection, not only do we work though past experienced which are now limiting, we work with the body to allow us to move again, to feel again. This modality is unique as we use the body to access the mind; but we also use the mind to access the body. As a Physiotherapist, I'm well versed in recognising how the body hold stresses and traumas, sometimes changing our posture, the way we walk, even altering the activities we can participate in. The emotional, psychological and relational toll can be huge, however, unfortunately this aspect can be overlooked by mainstream health professionals (this is why I now train health professionals too!). I am suited to work with people who are struggling a little at present, perhaps with mild depression or anxiety; struggling to cope with stress; overwhelmed at being a new parent; finding that chronic pain is limiting life; or just feeling a little but stuck or directionless. For people experiencing deeper depressions; personality disorders and suicidal intent, with full respect I would suggest exploring a therapist who has specialist training in these areas. I am happy to put you in touch with my training school for Somatic Counsellors who might be able to help.
